Worthwhile Movies for Teachers

Worthwhile Movies for Teachers

By Evangelidou Foteini, April 2014

Movies could be utilized as a great source of inspiration for teachers. They could reveal many sides of teaching and learning processes. As they come from many countries all over the world, they show many examples of teaching processes and they indicate the differences, which exist among the different schools. By watching movies, teachers could understand the way they behave in their classrooms or they could find some inspiring ideas, which they can use in their classrooms. Moreover, a movie, if it is appropriate, could be watched during the lesson by our students too and cause a nice constructive discussion. Generally, a good movie could be helpful for teachers in order to develop not only themselves but also their lessons.

I found a post in “Discussion Forum” of the course “Foundations of Teaching for Learning 2: Being a Teacher”, which war referred to inspiring movies for teachers. A peer of mine, whose name is Alex Alexandrou, made an extended personal research and suggests several movies. His list of movies contains the following suggestions:

  • Hurricane Season
  • Homeless to Harvard
  • Tin Soldier
  • The Chorus
  • Race to Nowhere (documentary)
  • Waiting for Superman (documentary)
  • Scent of a Woman
  • Detachment
  • Freedom Writer’s Diary
  • Educating Rita
  • My Class
  • To Sir with Love
  • Good Will Hunting
  • Goodbye Mr. Chips
  • The Blackboard Jungle
  • Les Diaboliques
  • Kes
  • The Class
  • Won’t Back Down
  • Cinema Paradiso
  • Tough Young Teachers (documentary series on the BBC)
  • First Grader
  • Life is Beautiful
